SENATE RECOMMENDS INCREASE IN PRICES OF PETROL AND DIESEL
Abuja – In spite of the biting hardship Nigerians are going through, more miseries are set to be inflicted on them through impending fuel price increase.
The proposed increase of N5 per litre on Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise called petrol and as well as on diesel, was made by the Senate Committee on Works in its final report on a Bill titled “The National Road Fund (Est, etc) Bill, 2017 (SB 21)”.
The import of the proposed fuel levy charge is that, end users (motorists) will pay N5 tax on every litre of fuel bought at any fuel station.
The Senate Committee on Works under the leadership of Senator Kabiru Gaya in the report, also advocated for the implementation of a special 0.5 percent levy on commercial vehicles passengers fares, all in a bid to raise money to pay for road constructions and maintenance.
The Bill which is part of the 11 economic reform Bills initiated by the Senator Bukola Saraki led leadership of the Senate, as contribution to economic recovery by the country, has already been endorsed by the House of Representatives.

44 NIGERIANS AND GHANAIANS DIE IN SAHARA DESART
Survivors say 44 people have died of thirst after their truck broke down in the Sahara Desert in northern Niger, the Red Cross has told the BBC.
The six survivors, all women, walked to a remote village and are being looked after in Dirkou, Niger, Red Cross official Lawal Taher said.
They say several children are among the dead.
The Ghanaians and Nigerians were trying to get to Libya, reports Nigerien news site Sahelien.
So far no-one has visited the site to identify the bodies, Mr Taher added.
The route from Niger to Libya is one of the main ways migrants reach North Africa before crossing the Mediterranean Sea to get to Europe.
Crossing the Sahara is one of the most perilous parts of the journey as migrants are crammed into pickup trucks often with only enough room for a few litres of water, reports Reuters news agency.
Authorities told Reuters that is it almost impossible to know how many have died in the vast and unpoliced Sahara.
Last June, the bodies of 34 migrants, including 20 children, were found in the Sahara Desert near Niger's border with Algeria.
It appeared they had died of thirst after being abandoned by their smuggler, a government minister said at the time.

OBAMA REACTS TO DONALD TRUMP'S DECISION TO PULL OUT OF THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
Former US president, Barack Obama has issued a statement expressing his disappointment in Donald Trump for pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Obama accused Trump of “rejecting the future” by pulling out of the Paris climate deal saying, 'this Administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future.”
At the moment, 194 countries including Nigeria still remain in the agreement while US joins Syria and Nicaragua as one of the three countries not in the Paris climate agreement.
Read the full statement from Obama below...
A year and a half ago, the world came together in Paris around the first-ever global agreement to set the world on a low-carbon course and protect the world we leave to our children.
It was steady, principled American leadership on the world stage that made that achievement possible. It was bold American ambition that encouraged dozens of other nations to set their sights higher as well. And what made that leadership and ambition possible was America’s private innovation and public investment in growing industries like wind and solar – industries that created some of the fastest new streams of good-paying jobs in recent years, and contributed to the longest streak of job creation in our history.
Simply put, the private sector already chose a low-carbon future. And for the nations that committed themselves to that future, the Paris Agreement opened the floodgates for businesses, scientists, and engineers to unleash high-tech, low-carbon investment and innovation on an unprecedented scale. The nations that remain in the Paris Agreement will be the nations that reap the benefits in jobs and industries created.
I believe the United States of America should be at the front of the pack. But even in the absence of American leadership; even as this Administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future; I’m confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we’ve got.

So we’re getting out but we’ll start to negotiate and we’ll see if we can make a deal that’s fair.’
'as someone who cares deeply about the environment, as I do, I cannot in good conscience support a deal which harms the United States, which it does'.

FAYEMI FILES A LAWSUIT ASKING THE COURT TO STOP FAYOSE FROM PROBING HIM
Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past governor of Ekiti State and curret Minister of Mines and Steel Development has asked an Ado-Ekiti High Court to stop the Ekiti State govt from probing him.
According to a statement by the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Mr Olayinka Oyebode, Dr Fayemi wants the court to restrain Governor Fayose, the state’s attorney-general and members of the judicial commission of enquiry from probing him because two cases on the planned probe are pending in courts of competent jurisdiction.
The Ekiti State House of Assembly, which ordered the governor to set up the commission of enquiry, and the Speaker of the Assembly were also joined in the suit.
The Ekiti State Assembly had asked the governor to set up the judicial panel to probe Dr Fayemi after it accused him of failing to honour repeated invitations to appear before the lawmakers to answer questions regarding the finances of the state during his tenure as governor.
But Dr Fayemi wants the court to declare the resolution of the Assembly directing the governor, who is the first defendant in the suit, to set up the commission of enquiry to investigate or probe his administration null and void. This, according to him, is because the resolution was passed during the pendency of a case involving him, the Assembly and its speaker, which touched on the legality of the summons and powers of the Assembly to conduct any investigation or direct any other person or body to do so without strict compliance with the tenets of the 1999 Constitution. The minister accused the Assembly of oppression, claiming that it had already investigated him and submitted the report of the investigation to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for further action.
