120 PRISONER TO WRTE JAMB

#UTME2017: 120 Prison Inmates to write Forthcoming Exam

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says about 1.7 million candidates registered for this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) including 120 prison inmates who will also sit for the examination.
The Registrar of the board, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja. He also confirmed the examination had not been postponed and will hold on Friday, May 13 except for those that have Seven Days Adventist service.
He also advised UTME candidates to always check their e-mails for further updates, noting that some candidates are fond of giving out their passwords and e-mail addresses to strangers in spite of several warnings from the board.
“Candidates should be aware of fraudsters who hide under cyber cafe operators to defraud innocent children. We have caught some of them while mischievously collecting money from candidates with the help of some security officers,’’ he said.

I WANT MY HUSBAND TO SIGN AN UNDERTAKING THAT NOTING WILL HAPPEN TO ME----MERCY AIGHE

Nollywood actress Mercy Aigbe has said that she wants her estranged husband, Lanre Gentry to sign an undertaking that he will not come near her, adding that he had sent thugs to her house.
Lanre, who is currently in Kirikiri Prisons was accused of physically abusing the actress.
Mercy reported the case to the police when she could no longer keep quiet.
“The case is no longer between my husband and I. It is now between the Office of the Public Defender, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and my husband. The officer is the one handling the case.
I cannot be washing my dirty linen in public and that is why I do not want to go into details of my marriage. It is not in my place to send him to jail. I only reported to the appropriate authorities and I just need him to show remorse for what he has done to me. He does not know the gravity of what he has done to me, the pains that I feel right now and the trauma I have gone through.
I am still in pains and I am bleeding internally because I am still coughing out blood. Instead of him to be remorseful, he was busy going online to say all sorts of things about me and concocting lies. He has been fabricating stories to taint my image because he knows I am the one with a reputation at stake. I intentionally did not say anything even though I have proof of everything I have to say. Instead of my husband to show some sense of responsibility and own up to what he did, he was busy dragging my name in the mud,” Mercy said.
On why she stayed
I endured all the things that I went through in his hands because of my children and also because of the fact that people look up to me as a role model. I have been through a lot and I pray and fast a lot so that things would go on smoothly. I have been praying and enduring a lot but this last time, the beating was brutal and he almost killed me.
On Allegations of Promiscuity
Before I got married, there was no scandal about me being promiscuous, no one could say that I was sleeping around; so why would I now do such as a married woman? If I were that promiscuous like he claims, how come no journalist has ever reported such stories about me? I have been working so hard to build my brand and now he wants to rubbish it.
On her estranged husband’s anger management “problem”
The problem with him is that he cannot control his anger and I have advised him on several occasions to see a therapist or enrol in anger management class to learn how to control his temper but he refused. He gets violent whenever he is angry and that is his problem. There is no way a couple would not fight but it does not always have to lead to physical violence. On that fateful day, he hit my head on the wall just because I found out that he was having an affair with someone very close to me and we had an argument.
He came to beat me at my tailor’s place. He even beat my make-up artiste and broke her hand. It was from that place that I was rushed to the hospital very late that night. When he was beating me, he was acting as if he was possessed. Ever since he had been beating me, he had never beaten me to this extent. It was as if he had made up his mind to kill me or blind me so that my career would end. I don’t know why he is doing all this. I have offered to take him to church but whenever we get there, he would refuse to enter. I tried all my best. If only he went for therapy, all this would not have happened and I don’t have to stay with him till he kills me. Imagine if I had died that day, I wonder what kind of cover up story he would have released to the public.
Mercy made it clear that she is fighting for her life adding that she wants him to sign an undertaking that he’d not come close to her.
“I am fighting for my life because if I die there would be no image to protect. I just want him to sign an undertaking that nothing would happen to me because a man who is capable of sending thugs to the house is capable of anything. Someone who can set me up and lie that I have mental illness can do anything. He should sign the undertaking and we should go our different ways. If not, I would leave the case to the appropriate agency and the law would take its full course,” she said.

FAMILIES OF RELEASED CHIBOK GIRLS LAMENT LACK OF ACCESS TO THEIR CHILDREN

More than six months later, his niece, Sarah, is still in a government rehabilitation camp where the girls rarely see their families. “We were very happy to learn of the news that she was released,” he told The Stream. “But we are not very much impressed with the way the government is handling the whole rehabilitation process.”
Since her release, he’s only seen his niece once, when he traveled to Chibok last December. Even then, he says there were set time limits on visits, and many topics – like her experience as a prisoner – were off limits. He calls her often, but says she is only allowed to talk for two-three minutes before being cut off. He says his niece has told him that “only females can sneak in to see them sometimes but males are not allowed into the compound.”
“Nobody is allowed to see them,” he says. “So it’s like another imprisonment, but this one has to do with the government.”
Peter’s sister Elizabeth is still being held by Boko Haram.
The Stream also discussed the dangers of isolation; what rehabilitation means in this situation; and whether the ‘Chibok girls’ have become too famous to ever truly be free.

DSS REFUSE TO PRODUCE IFEANYI UBAH IN COURT

DSS refuses to produce detained Ifeanyi Ubah in court

The Department of State Security Service (DSS) on Friday refused an order of a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos to produce Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah in court.
The court had on May 9, following an ex-parte application filed and argued by Ubah’s lawyer, Mrs. Ifeoma Esom, instructed the DSS and its director-general to produce Ubah in court this Friday or show cause why he should not be produced.
But when the case came up, Ubah was nowhere near the court, a situation that led his lawyer, Mr Ajibola Oluyede, to ask the court to order immediate release of his client, Ubah, due to flagrant disobedience of the order of the court made on May 8, 2017.
However, the prayer by Ubah’s lawyer was declined by the presiding judge, Justice Muhammed Idris.
Oluyede argued that the DSS utilised what he described as ‘abuse of court and power and said that the action of the security operative amounted to disobedience of the court order and subversion to the authority and dignity of the court.
Peter Okerinmade, counsel to DSS and its director general, contended that the court should sack the submissions made by Ubah’s legal team on the ground that the DSS had filed an application before the court challenging the court’s jurisdiction to entertain Ubah’s application.
The presiding judge in his submission described the scenario as sad and unfortunate.
He said, “On May 9, 2017, upon hearing the applicant’s ex-parte application, the court directed the fourth and fifth applicants to produce the applicant in court today. From the record of the court, it shows that the ruling was served on the respondents on May 10, 2015, by 10 am.
“It was also shown that the respondents on the same day obtained an order remanding the applicant from my learned brother Halilu J of FCT High Court. It’s clear that there is a direct conflict between the order of this court and of my learned brother Halilu J of FCT High Court.

HERDSMEN BEHEAD COMMERCIAL MOTORCYCLIST,FARMER IN DELTA

DELTA: Herdsmen behead commercial motorcyclist, 5 farmers

The Ossissa community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State was thrown into disarray when armed assailants suspected to be herdsmen struck, beheading a commercial motorcyclist and five other farmers.
According to reports, the commercial motorcyclist identified as Udoka Ossai (said to be in his 20’s) had gone to drop a passenger at Ossissa Junction along the Ughelli/Asaba Expressway, when he encountered the herdsmen who had ambushed the farmers.
After beheading their victims, the herdsmen immediately fled the area before a gathering army of youths in the community could get at them down for their atrocities.
An eyewitness who did not want to be identified said; “Udoka Ossai and the six farmers were attacked near Ossissa Junction. Udoka was slaughtered on the throat. Before I could draw the attention of villagers to the scene, he was already dead.
“Our youths who mobilised to the bush in search of the killers could not see the herdsmen who had already fled the area. They could not go far for the search because it was already dark. They recovered the corpses and left them at the police station at Ashaka. Over 40 of our people have been killed since last year owing to herdsmen attacks.”
Reports say an angry arm of youths later recovered Ossai’s body, and then marched to the Ashaka Divisional Police Station to dump the corpse at about 8:15pm, while others went in search of the herdsmen.
