OVER 70 PRISONERS ESCAPE IN SECOND CONGO PRISON BREAK IN ONE WEEK

Over 70 prisoners broke out of a prison in the Southwestern Democratic Republic of Congo on Friday just two days after thousands escaped from the capital’s main penitentiary.

According to Valentin Vangi, president of the Civil Society of Kongo-Central province, he told Reuters that 73 of 77 prisoners at the prison in the town of Kasangulu escaped around 2 a.m. (0100 GMT).

'The criminals climbed the wall. When the guard went to inform the police, he left the door open, which allowed them to escape.'

Jean Claude Vuemba, a national deputy from Kasangulu, also told Reuters that 73 prisoners had escaped but that 10 had been recaptured by early afternoon. 

On Wednesday, about 4,000 prisoners escaped from Kinshasa’s Makala prison when it was stormed by supporters of a jailed separatist cult leader.

Authorities said on Thursday they had recaptured 179 of the fugitives who escaped on Wednesday.

Although,  the jailbreak is common in Congo but the latest escapes are reportedly ways of frustrating President Joseph Kabila who has refused to step down from power after his mandate ended in December.

LESBIAN WOMAN RAPED,STONE TO DEATH AND THEN BURNT IN SOUTH AFRICA

An openly lesbian woman from Soweto was brutalised and murdered in a suspected hate crime, the day before starting her promising new job. On Sunday, May 14, the half naked body of 27-year-old Lerato Tambai Moloi, described by activists as a “butch” lesbian, was found in Naledi Ext.

She was discovered by community members who were cutting down tall grass in a field near a railway line. Her trousers and underwear had been pulled down. Large rocks had been thrown onto her head.

According to a police statement, Moloi also had three wounds to her neck. A knife was found next to her body. It is believed that she was raped.

Moloi was last seen in the early hours of Sunday morning at the Gift’s Inn tavern with a 38-year-old man, who has now been arrested as a suspect in the murder. Forensic samples was taken from both the victim and the suspect, said police.

Steve Letsike, Director of Access Chapter 2, was among a group of activists who met with Moloi’s family and the police on Monday. They also visited the tavern and the location where her body was discovered.

The young woman, who lived with her aunt, had just landed a new job, which she was excited to start this week.

“The family is shocked, they are traumatized,” Letsike told Mambaonline. “It’s so sad to be around them, listening to how she was going to be able to help at home and the family”. 

When she left the house on Saturday, Moloi told her aunt that she would buy her something for Mother’s Day when she got her first paycheque.

“She will never see another Mother’s Day. That opportunity for them to take care of one another was taken away,” said Letsike.

“I am broken. I am angry, because we are sitting here with a rise in hate crime incidents in South Africa. Prevention of these incidents is not prioritised. I think we have to face reality; that we are facing a war on women’s bodies – and particularly the LGBTI community.”

Two suspects were arrested and appeared before Pretoria Magistrate Court on May 17th. One pleaded guilty and the other one not guilty. Meanwhile, LGBT members (pictured) occupied the court demanding for justice

A woman who goes by the Instagram name (micygh) was allegedly caught on camera cleaning tequila glasses with her saliva at Diamond Pub and Grill, East Legon, Ghana. She is said to be the owner of the bar.

YOUNG NIGERIAN LADY COMMIT SUICIDE

Tragedy struck in the Ajuwon area of Lagos State on Wednesday May 17, at Bada Hospital at Bale road, when a young lady said to be in her late 20's committed suicide by drinking sniper insecticide.

 

The lady, identified as Patience Akpan, was said to have left her father's place that Wednesday afternoon before she was seen in another street within the area wringing in pains, with the sniper bottle still in her hands.

 

Her dad is said to be a driver who works with a bank on Ajuwon/Akute road.

According to an eye witness, on the day of her suicide, Patience was seen on Oni Street around Ajuwon, on the floor and in pains before she was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

 

She had lived in the area with her parents about 12 years ago but when her parents separated, she left with her mum, only to come back that Tuesday and committed suicide the next day.

LAWYER SUES LINDAIKEJI AND MERCY AIGHE FOR DEFAMATION

In what could be best described as a drastic action against the defamation of character of its client Miss Opemititi Ajayi, Afolabi Fashanu & Co has wrote the duo of Mercy Aigbe and Linda Ikeji over the alleged frivolous and malicious statements altered and published respectively by the duo.

Recall that in an interview with Broadway tv, Mercy Aigbe was quoted to have claimed her husband slept with Miss Opemititi, a statement which is unsubstantiated and allegedly fabricated.

Linda Ikeji on her part had exclusively broke the news on her blog that Opemititi A.k.a queen stunner was responsible for Mercy Aigbe’s failed marriage, thereby dragging her name in the mud without any backing evidence; an act of crime as codified in the cyber crime laws of Nigeria.

However, the complianant (Opemititi) lawyers have demanded a retraction and public apologies from both mercy aigbe and Linda ikeja in the media including their social platforms and also demanded a total sum of 500million naira each from the duo as damages.

3 SUICIDE BOMBERS DIE IN FOILED ATTACK IN THE UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI

Three male suicide bombers Thursday night struck at University of Maiduguri, but their mission was largely a flop. It was the fourth attack on the school since January 2017.

The bombers at about 23.50hrs attempted to enter the female hostel, but were stopped by eagle-eyed security men.

One of them hurriedly detonated the Improvised Explosive Device (IED), strapped on his body.

He killed himself and injured three security men.

The other two scampered off and detonated their bombs near a construction site, close to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Victor Isuku, the spokesperson of the Borno police command said:

On 18/5/2017 at about 2350hrs, three male suicide bombers with IEDs strapped to their bodies, gained entry into the premises of university of Maiduguri.

In an attempt to enter the female hostels, they were intercepted by security operatives.

One of the bombers hurriedly detonated his IED vest, killing himself instantly.

The other two bombers detonated their near a construction site also within the proximity of the University premises, killing themselves alone.

Three university security personnel reported injured. Scene visited by EOD personnel and normalcy restored.

JAMB CANDIDATE ARRESTED WITH LOCALLY MADE GUN INSIDE EXAMINATION HALL IN NASSARAWA STATE

Officials of the National Security and Defence Service Corps NSCDC,  Nassarawa state, have arrested a 21 year old candidate of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME, for possessing a locally made pistol and two rounds of live ammunition inside one of the examination halls in Nassarawa state.


Confirming his arrest, the state commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Bashir Lawal-Kano, said the suspect when interrogated, said someone gave him the gun for safe keeping. Lawal-Kano aded that the suspect would soon be charged to court for illegal possession of arms.

ACTING PRESIDENT YEMI OSINBAJO RECIEVED THE 2017 BUDGET

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo, has received the 2017 budget. His Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, announced this via twitter some minutes ago. There is still some controversy as to who would sign the budget.
While Laolu took to his twitter handle yesterday to say Osinbajo would assent to the budget when he is satisfied with the content, the senior special assistant to President Buhari on National Assembly matters, Ita Enang, told Channels TV in an interview that the budget would be signed by Buhari who is in the UK  for a medical checkup. 

Lai Mohammed had on Wednesday told state house correspondents that when the budget will be sent to the presidency, the issue of who would sign it would be addressed.

19 PERSONS RESCUED ALIVE IN COLLAPSED 3 STORY BUILDING IN LAGOS

19 persons have been rescued alive and three bodies recovered from a 3 storey building which collapsed at  Ilasamaja, Lagos on Thursday, May 18th.

The building under construction collapsed, trapping several people inside. Rescue operations are ongoing. More photos after the cut.

COURT ORDER FORFIETURE OF N449MILLION FOUND IN LAGOS SHOP TO FG

Justice Rilwan Aikawa of the Federal High Court in Lagos has ordered the final forfeiture of the sum of N449,597,000 found in an abandoned Bureau de Change shop in Victoria Island, Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC on April 8th.

Justice Aikawa gave the order for permanent forfeiture after no one came forward to claim ownership of the money.


The judge had on April 19th granted an order for the interim forfeiture of the money pending when anyone would come forward to claim it. EFCC hand approached the court for an order for the forfeiture of the money after a respondent in the case, Mohammed Tauheed, failed to come forward to claim the money. Counsel for the EFCC, Idris Mohammed, told the judge that the interim order of April 19 had been advertised in the newspaper on May 11, so as to bring the case to the notice of Tauheed any interested party.

However neither Tauheed nor any other person come forward to claim the money. Delivering judgment on the application for permanent forfeiture, Justice Aikawa said “This court ordered, among others, the respondent (Tauheed) and any other interested party to show cause, within 14 days, why the interim forfeiture of N449,597,000 should not be made final. As far as my record shows, neither the respondent nor any other interested party has filed any affidavit or any other process to show cause why the interim order should not be made final.

In the instant case, the respondent has, additionally, not filed any process in response to the motion on notice. In the circumstances, I have no option but to grant the application as prayed. Accordingly, I hereby ordered that the sum of N449,597,000 found in possession of the respondent, which sum is reasonably suspected to be proceeds of an unlawful activity, be finally forfeited to the Federal Government.”

POLICE RESCUE ALLEGED ROBBER FROM BEING SET ABLAZE

Police officer from Atakpa division rescued an alleged robber from being set ablaze at Hawkins cemetery Calabar South, Cross River State.

The alleged robber, (pictured sitting on the floor) said to be a load carrier was caught red-handed in the act in the early hours of Thursday, May 18th, along Hawkins while carting away with some goods.
He was beaten by mob then taken to Hawkins cemetery, beaten again, soaked in fuel ready to be set ablaze before the Police intervened.

Police doctors at Atakpa station treated the suspect while some alleged stolen properties were recovered from his house.

Benue state residents are taunting their state governor, Samuel Ortom, after photos of some wheelbarrows he allegedly donated to empower youths in the state, surfaced online.
