PENSIONER COMMITS SUICID IN BENUE STATE DUE TO POVERTY AND FRUSTRATION

A retired worker with the Benue State Local Government Service, Mr. Gabriel Nomsha, committed suicide because he couldn't afford to feed his family and pay his children's school fees.

The Chairman of Coalition of Local Government Pensioners,’ Mike Vembe, who disclosed this on Wednesday, during the peaceful demonstration at the Government House Makurdi, said Mr Nomsha hanged himself a week ago due to frustration.

"One of our members, Gabriel Nomsha, from Gwer West Local Government Area, committed suicide last week as a result of poverty and frustration."
He explained that after the deceased had been screened, he came with the hope of collecting his pension but was disappointed when he wasn’t paid.

At least 2,000 local pensioners from 23 local government areas of the state on Tuesday slept at the gate of the Government House in Makurdi to protest the non-payment of their pension to the tune of N1.1 billion.

The pensioners arrived the government House in the afternoon but could not see the governor so they decided to pass the night at the gate of government house.

Efforts by security operatives mounting the gate to disperse them were rebuffed. The next morning Governor Samuel Ortom who was travelling to Abuja, came to address them.

Vambe who led the pensioners, said the protest became necessary after the Ministry of Finance stopped giving money to Local Government Pensions Board.

"We slept at the gate of the Government House since yesterday to press home our demands for the payment of our pension. The finance ministry stopped giving money to Local Government Pensions Board and this is causing our hardship."

Governor Ortom, who sympathised with them, said their welfare was of utmost importance to his government and promised to do everything possible to clear their pension arrears.

COURT ORDERED DSS TO RELEASE IFEANYI UBA UNCONDITIONALLY WITHIN 48 HOURS

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos on Thursday ordered the unconditional release of the Chief Executive Officer of Capital Oil Limited, Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, from the Department of State Services (DSS) custody.

Despite heavy downpour in Court, patriotic Nigerians and workers of Capital Oil and Gas defied the rain by trooping out en masse show support for Dr. Ubah.

While delivering his ruling on Thursday morning, Justice Idris held that Ubah’s detention without charge was illegal.
The judge directed the DSS to file a criminal charge against Ubah within 48 hours if it has a case against him or release him with no conditions attached.

“An order is hereby made, directing the 4th and 5th respondent being, the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the Department of State Security Service (DSS) to within 48 hours of the judgement of the court in this action, initiate or institute a criminal action against the 1st applicant before a court of competent jurisdiction if he has committed any crime against the state,” said the judge.

“An order is hereby made, directing the, the Director General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the Department of State Security Service (DSS) to release the 1st applicant from detention unconditionally if no criminal action is instituted against him within 48 hours of this judgement,” said Justice Idris.

The judge also directed the Attorney General of the Federation to “ensure strict and due compliance of the judgement.”

Ubah has been in detention for weeks over allegations that he diverted petroleum products stored in his tank farm by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The court chided the DSS for lying on oath in a bid to justify Ubah's detention, describing the action as "unfortunate" while from every available evidence, he was arrested in Lagos and flown to Abuja, where he has been detained some weeks.

"Security agencies must understand that they are not instruments of debt recovery" Justice Idris held.
