MOROCCO: STONE-THROWING PROTESTERS CLASH WITH POLICE OVER RELEASE OF ACTIVIST

MOROCCO: Stone-throwing protesters clash with police over release of activist
Rowdy demonstrations have continued for an eighth night on the streets across Morocco’s northern Rif region with protesters demanding the release of a prominent activist.
Reports say stone-throwing demonstrators clashed with police in Imzouren as calls for the release of a popular movement leader and activist Nasser Zefzafi who was detained by authorities grow.
According to feelers, protests also gripped the town of al-Hoceima, where scores of protesters clashed with policemen after Friday prayers.
“The whole Rif believes in freedom and humanity and in social justice,” said Cilia Ziani, one of the two women who inherited the leadership of the Hirak movement after Zefzafi was jailed.
“If you imprison our leaders, we will resist until our demands are granted,” she added.
The well-known activist who has been charged with threatening national security by authorities was arrested after he organised months of protests against unemployment and corruption.
Morocco has been gripped by demonstration since the death of a fishmonger in Al-Hoceima in October.
